Get ready for an exciting addition to the Gloucester Rugby team! A World Cup-winning legend is joining the ranks.
Gloucester has announced the signing of Jean Kleyn, a formidable South African lock, for the 2026-27 season. Kleyn, with a decade of experience under his belt, is leaving his mark on the United Rugby Championship side Munster to join the Cherry and Whites.
Since his debut in 2023, Kleyn has represented the Springboks in 10 caps, including a memorable appearance off the bench in the World Cup final victory against New Zealand. But here's where it gets controversial... Kleyn has also represented Ireland, playing five matches during the 2019-20 season, including two at the 2019 World Cup. He qualified to play for Ireland based on residency, having signed for Munster three years prior.
George Skivington, Gloucester's director of rugby, expressed his admiration for Kleyn, saying, "He brings a real edge, experience, and a winning mentality that will be invaluable for our group. His physical presence and professionalism will raise the bar for everyone in the squad."
Kleyn, now 32, has made over 150 appearances for Munster, even winning the 2022-23 URC title. He's excited about his new chapter, saying, "Gloucester Rugby has an incredible history and a passionate fanbase. The vision they shared with me aligns perfectly with what I'm seeking for my career's next phase."
The second row is the fourth player Gloucester has secured for next season, joining Wales duo Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake, and scrum-half Dan Robson. With these additions, the team is shaping up to be a force to be reckoned with.
And this is the part most people miss... Kleyn's versatility and winning mentality could be the X-factor that takes Gloucester to new heights. But what do you think? Will Kleyn's impact be as significant as Skivington predicts? Let's discuss in the comments!
