The 2026 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, held at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, GA, witnessed an extraordinary performance by NC State's Max Carlsen. On the fourth day of the championships, Max Carlsen, a native of Las Vegas, delivered a stunning performance. He entered the finals with a career-best time of 4:11.89 from a dual meet with Virginia in January. In the prelims, he finished third, just behind the Cal duo of Erisman and Oliveira de Moraes.
But it was in the finals where Carlsen truly shone. He took an early lead, clocking 47.69 at the 100-meter mark and 1:38.65 at the 200. Maintaining his rhythm, he split 51.15 and 50.51 on the next two 100s, before an explosive final 100 in 49.13, including a blazing 24.35 in the last 50 meters. This incredible finish secured his victory by over a second and a half, earning him the event win and the ACC gold.
Carlsen's journey to this achievement is even more remarkable. Before joining the Wolfpack, his fastest time was 4:18.87, set in high school. Since then, he had not gone below 4:16.62 until this breakthrough performance. During his freshman season, he set a new personal best four times, with the ACC title being the pinnacle.
With this swim, Carlsen moved ahead of Ross Dant (4:10.35) for the second-fastest time in NC State's program history. He now trails only Anton Ipsen's program record of 4:09.19.
